MARMORIS

MARMORIS is an intimate photographic journey across the emerald ocean as seen through the eyes of artist Eve Marisa Rungroj. Her reinterpretation of the Andaman Sails fragrance captures the ocean’s great power, a glittering beauty that appears to spread infinitely in all directions, while still highlighting the strength of the human spirit in these fleeting moments in our lives.

PAÑPURI speaks to Eve Marisa about her MARMORIS exhibition.

MARMORIS means ‘the shining surface of the ocean.’ It is the way the light reflects on the water which is what has inspired all of the photographs in this exhibition. I wanted to convey a story of the sea’s magnificent beauty.

Photography and scent can both draw memories to the surface in the same way. Scent has the ability to preserve memories in that moment and we can see this when a scent is named after a particular memory. Photography has the same ability. It is able to record a story through a medium that takes us back to our memory of that place. So, we can find serenity, whether it’s from touch, scent or photography.

I want people who come to see this exhibition to take the time to really take in the scent and abstract photographs as part of a collection of stories to spark the mind to travel through their own memories.

Because this is a photograph of the first light of day, a view we saw when we woke up very early in the morning. The light would hit the water until it sparkled. It is the first image that truly made me feel the word MARMORIS and led it to becoming the concept of this exhibition.

This exhibition perfectly conveys who I am as an artist. Because of this exhibition, I was able to experiment with techniques that I have never tried before. For instance, I was able to try Risograph Printing which results in a different schematic of colors than my previous work. The resulting blur in the photographs also helped convey the emotional message contained within the photos, consistent with the concept of serenity and cherished memories that PAÑPURI talks about.

Abstract photography with visual elements that convey stories in my voice. My photographs also tend to lean towards a cool tone while having a still and calm composition.

I’ve felt a connection with the Andaman Sea since I was young. When I wanted to have fun, I would go back to the ocean. When I wanted to find peace, I would go back to the ocean. Every moment of my life was connected to the ocean. It is where I find inspiration, happiness and hope. Blue is the color that brings peace to my heart.
