Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic poem, written in IV century BCE, addresses the burning of fragrant slivers some 4,000 years ago. A classic oriental woody note, milky, soft, warm, rich, smooth, creamy with a green top note. The best quality used to be the Mysore sandalwood variety from India, nowadays greatly reduced to the point of extinction from perfumery due to shortage of the natural material (the species is protected from harvesting because it's an endangered species). Australian sandalwood and New Caledonian sandalwood are different species with a harsher odor profile. A powdery earthy rooty scent, with woody, violet flower nuances. The most valued component of orris root is oil of orris (0.1–0.2%), a yellow-white mass containing myristic acid. Oil of orris is sometimes sold as orris butter. In Japan, the roots and leaves of the plant were hung in the eaves of a house to protect the house and occupants from attacks by evil spirits. One ton of iris root produces two kilos of essential oil, also referred to as orris root butter or butter of iris, making it a highly prized substance
